McCausland started off in the art department of the fledgling Mushroom Records in Melbourne in the 1970s and designed early Daddy Cool and Skyhooks posters and LP covers. Carson Blown cover is a good example of his understanding of how ‘Far Out’ cartoonish hip imagery could reach the new ‘experimental’ audiences of the ‘70s.

You may have thought the blues started in the Deep South, then Chicago, then was revivified in London in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s – and you’d be spot on. But in Australia, our musos were listening to that blues too; and came up with their own sharp and sometimes bent approach to modern rock’s most influential genre.

Our Australian Blues and Boogie podcast features Wendy Saddington, Chain, Kahvas Jute, Carson, Backsliders – and there are some notable omissions that divided our usually oh-so-copacetically connected commentators. Then again these podcasts are only meant to be a ‘sampler’ not the ‘best of …’
